“It was May 2021, and my body began to feel different. I couldn’t walk from my bedroom to my kitchen without feeling like I had just run a marathon. So, I went to the doctor. It took them two weeks to find out about my failing heart. Doctors told me my heart was operating at less than 20%. They had me on medicine for three months and also tried a defibrillator, but none of it worked. I decided to go to MUSC for another opinion and explained to my doctor about the pain and swelling in my stomach. By November, my heart was operating at 14%. I was too sick to go home from the hospital and was told I needed a heart transplant. After receiving the news, I informed my family and told them to cremate me and ensure my insurance was up-to-date because I did not know the surgery’s outcome. On December 2nd, I was almost done completing testing, and on December 3rd, I was listed on the transplant list. On the fourth day…my lucky day, I got the call, ‘We found you a heart.'”
